from Boulder, Colorado the Corvairs odysey began in the late seventies and took the band to both San Francisco and New York City. During the band's 12 year career they released 3 LPs and 2 EPs in both the USA and France.
The 7-song DENVER SESSIONS '79 compiles the band's earliest demos and is offered at a special price at the PreFab store. These demos were recorded in the summer of 1979 at Denver, Colorado's Free Reelin' Studios. The present the young band in a raw and honest fashion. As a special bonus, two January 1978 recordings from the Boulder art/rock band Joey Vain and Scissors are included. For fans of the the early American midwest new wave sound this CD is a must!
Shortly after the recording of the Denver demos the band relocated to San Francisco for several months. The band were regular performers at such venues as the infamous Denver punk rock club "Malfunction Junction" and San Francisco's "Mabuhay Gardens", "Deaf Club", and "The Palms" (on Polk St.). Relocating to New York in the early 80s, the TEMPLE FIRE EP was released as a 12" 45rpm maxi EP on the new Sourmash label in both the U.S. This was the fledgling record label's second vinyl release (and only US Corvair release) after the Certain General/Band of Outsider LP FARAWAY IN AMERICA came out earlier in '84.
The band at the recording of this EP was a trio consiting of Phil Gammage on guitar, Jon Cormany on bass, and Ricky Brody-Smith on drums/percussion. Recording was done at the New York studio of David and George Kaufman, noted members of the New York rock band THE NAILS ("88 Lines About 44 Women" -- a college radio hit in the mid 80s and the soundtrack of a popular Mazda commercial in the late 90s).
Drummer Martin Blazy joined The Corvairs for their first full length recording RIO BLANCO. Released in 1986, the LP was produced by Fleshtones guitarist and band compadre Keith Streng and featured more of a pop sound. Originally released in '87 by Cryptovision Records (Donner Party, Black Orchids, etc.) this LP has never been released in full in a digital format.
The band's final commerically released recording was the European-only New Rose CD (France) HITCHHIKER in 1989. Here the band returned to their American garage roots and delivered one of their finest efforts. Songs like "Never Get Me Down" and "Find My Way Home" are standouts.
