Phil Gammage has been one of the most critically acclaimed rock and jazz guitarists for the past two decades. His compositions and playing have helped define the "downtown" New York music style that has emerged in recent years. He has released several recordings as a band leader under his own name on both American and European labels. In addition he has performed with the popular cult band Certain General off and on since 1980. He performs on several of the band's recordings (including France's 1985 rock "album of the year" NOVEMBER'S HEAT) and has toured internationally with the group.

Songs from Gammage's song catalogue have been highly sought after by music directors for television and commercial use for several years. His music has appeared in television show soundtracks or in commercials on a wide range of broadcast and cable networks iA&E, the Food Channel, TLC, the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, Nickelodean, VH1, MTV, and the CW.Click here to inquire about the use of his music for soundtrack and/or commercial use.

Gammage founded the rock legendary New York post punk band Certain General with singer Parker Dulany. Playing lead guitar with that band until 1985, he performed on the records HOLIDAY OF LOVE, FARAWAY IN AMERICA, and the critically acclaimed album NOVEMBER'S HEAT.Early in 1999 a reunited Certain General recorded SIGNALS FROM THE SOURCE (CBGB Records). This was followed up by the French release of CLOSER TO THE SUN in late '00, AN INTRODUCTION TO WAR in '01, and LIVE AT THE PUBLIC THEATRE in '01. 2007 saw the release of the definitive General's compilation INVISIBLE NEW YORK, a 2-cd set that covers the bands 25 year career.

Focusing on the garage rock power trio The Corvairs in the mid 80's, he was the band's lead vocalist, primary songwriter, and guitarist. The Corvairs' international releases include TEMPLE FIRE, RIO BLANCO, and HITCHHIKER. Look for a compilation CD of classic Corvair songs called READY TO BURN to be released in 2004.

The year 1990 saw the release of the first Phil Gammage solo record NIGHT TRAIN in Europe. Later solo CDs include 1991's KNEEL TO RISING SUN and 1993's CRY OF THE CITY a collection of songs influenced by the works of American writers in the roman noir style. LOWLIFE STREET, Gammage's fourth solo CD was released in January 2000 on France's Last Call Records. The CD features ten new Gammage original songs. In 2002 MOTEL SONGS, a compilation of songs from his first four solo recordings, was released in the United States on SourMash USA.

Always searching for new forms of musical expression, Gammage founded the lounge/latin group Voodoo Martini in 1995. In 1997 they released their 10-song record EXOTIC AND MYSTERIOUS, THE SOUNDS OF VOODOO MARTINI. Gammage's swing music project, The Scarlet Dukes have released 2000's ROGUE'S ESCAPADE and LIVE AT WINDOWS ON THE WORLD, a document of a 2001 concert.

In recent years he has begun to explore purely instrumental composing. The recording (2003) TRACKS OF SOUND features 9 new instrumental originals and the playing of some of the east coast's top young jazz players. This moody and soulful CD is one of Gammage's best recording efforts and is an exclusive available only from the PreFab store. It includes an innovative rendition of the Certain General song "General's Theme" that longtime Certain General fans will find of great interest.

Also of interest is his SOUNDS TWENTY ONE song collection from 2011. 21 instrumentals originally recorded for soundtrack use that explore new depths of musical vistas.

Throughout his diverse career Phil Gammage has always shown an amazing consistency of great songwriting and great musicianship. When not playing music he enjoys watching sports on TV and swimming.
